Coring Trucks 30 Years Strong

Coring Trucks

One Call. One Team. Get More Out.

Keyhole coring cuts a small, precise opening in a road or sidewalk so vacuum excavation crews can reach underground utilities quickly and safely, with minimal disruption to the hard surface. OE cores, excavates, backfills and reinstates the original core, so the excavation looks like it never happened.

Why OE

Keyhole Coring From One Company

OE takes pride in making excavation look like it never happened.

OE starts with excavations that are as small and neat as possible, and fully restores the ground surface to look as good or better than before. The coring, the hydro excavation and the restoration are all done by OE's own team, never contracted out to third-party providers.

One Call, One Team

One call gives fast, easy access to streamlined end-to-end services, from coring to restoration.

Small, Neat Openings

OE starts with excavations that are as small and neat as possible.

Original Core Reinstated

The existing core is reinstated with Utilibond, with minimal disturbance to the structure and appearance of the surface.

As Good or Better Than Before

Hard and soft surfaces are fully restored to look as good or better than before.

What It Is

What Keyhole Coring Is

Keyhole coring cuts a circular hole through the road pavement or sidewalk, and the material beneath it is removed by vacuum excavation.

OE's coring machine cuts the core and sets it aside. Hydro excavation then removes the soil safely and without damage, exposing the utility while protecting underground infrastructure. Once the work is done, the hole is backfilled and the existing core is reinstated with Utilibond, restoring the road or sidewalk to its original state. Utilibond is a bonding compound for permanently reinstating pavement cores, developed and field-proven by the Consumers Gas Company, now Enbridge Gas Distribution.

Municipalities set the rules: in Toronto, for example, specification TS 4.70 limits keyhole cuts to 460 mm in diameter, requires unshrinkable fill to backfill keyholes within the road pavement, and asks for the core to be reinstated flush with the surface, where possible within 24 hours of cutting.

The Integrated Difference

One Company From Core to Reinstatement

Coring, excavation, backfill and reinstatement by one team, in one mobilization, instead of a separate contractor for each step.

Bundling the coring with the excavation, backfill and reinstatement that follow, in one mobilization, is where OE's LEAN approach pays off: up to 10% cost savings and 50% productivity gains when Customers book the full job with OE. OE runs integrated operations from 6 Ontario locations, and co-location reduces travel, emissions and cost. OE's NextGen units are still working trucks, but roughly ten decibels quieter than conventional ones.

Common Questions

Keyhole Coring FAQ

Answers to the questions OE's sales team hears most often.

What is keyhole coring?
Keyhole coring cuts a circular hole through the road pavement or sidewalk so the material beneath can be removed by vacuum excavation. It gives crews quick, safe access to underground utilities with minimal disruption to the hard surface.
How big is a keyhole core?
Municipalities set the limit. In Toronto, specification TS 4.70 allows keyhole cuts up to 460 mm in diameter; larger cores, up to 610 mm, need the City's prior approval.
How is the core put back?
After backfilling, OE reinstates the existing core with Utilibond, a bonding compound for permanently reinstating pavement cores, restoring the road or sidewalk to its original state. Toronto's TS 4.70 asks for the core to be reinstated flush with the surface, where possible within 24 hours of cutting.
What is used to backfill the hole?
It depends on the municipality and the surface. Toronto's TS 4.70 requires unshrinkable fill within the road pavement, with a pea gravel levelling course under the core. OE's on-demand U-Fill concrete trucks supply unshrinkable fill.
What if the core can't be reused?
Under Toronto's TS 4.70, a fractured or defective core is not reused; the opening is filled with new hot or warm mix asphalt instead. OE's fleet includes hot asphalt trucks.
What surfaces does OE restore?
Hard surfaces including concrete, asphalt, flagstone, interlocking brick, patio stone and wooden decking, plus soft-surface reseeding or re-sodding of grass.
